Nucleic Acid Labeling

Enzymatic labeling is a widely used method in molecular biology to attach labeled molecules to nucleic acids for detection or purification purposes. Several enzymatic and chemical methods are available to label DNA, RNA and oligonucleotide probes with tags such as radioactive phosphates, fluorophores or modified nucleotides.

One popular enzymatic labeling procedure involves using DNA polymerases to include labeled nucleotides into a growing DNA strand during DNA synthesis. This approach is often utilized in DNA sequencing, where fluorescently labeled nucleotides are combined into a DNA strand and the sequence is read by detecting the color of the incorporated nucleotide.
