Environmental and agricultural research

Understanding our world

Studying our world is a diverse undertaking. Microbes are everywhere, in water, soil, plants and more. QIAGEN provides the most powerful products to purify challenging samples for environmental and agricultural microbiome research. We enable you to tackle difficult-to-lyse microbes, eliminate inhibitors from your sample and achieve unbiased results. Gain meaningful insights to fully understand our world.

Extracting eDNA out of thin air

Dr. Darren Chooneea refers to himself as a sequencing maniac, seeking to “sequence the world”, researching all the types of samples around us, no matter how small - including samples he collects form the city air. At the Molecular Laboratories of the Natural History Museum (NHM), Dr. Chooneea uses innovative collection methods and microbial sequencing to track changes seen in the air over time. Linking collection data to environmental differences over time could have applications with mitigating the impacts of climate change, influence agriculture, and even apply to food biosecurity.

Impact of global change on host-microbiome interactions

Watch the webinar on host-microbe interactions and how global change impacts microbial ecology. Isabelle Laforest-Lapointe, Assistant Professor at University of Sherbrooke, formally postdoctoral fellow at the University of Calgary, Canada, presents a study that looks at new evidence on eukaryotes as fundamental species in two ecosystems – the phyllosphere and the human gut.

Gourmet for beef? Improving cattle feed efficiency

Asst. Prof. Phillip Myer looks into optimizing the energy that a cow can harvest from its feed. The long-term goal of his research is to develop novel nutritional and microbial tools, which can be used to contribute to sustainable beef production. By breeding cattle more likely to propagate desirable rumen microbes, their digestion efficiency may be improved. Such efficient feed may positively impact the entire beef production chain.

Tell us how QIAGEN products can help you tackle the microbiome.
“I have been using QIAGEN products since my grad days and [I am] extremely satisfied with them in terms of [their] high quality and the ease of use.“
Isabelle Laforest-Lapointe, formally postdoctoral fellow at Arrieta lab at the departments of Physiology & Pharmacology and Pediatrics at University of Calgary, Canada
“The QIAGEN products have always worked the way they are supposed to. The yield obtained by the extraction kits has been highly satisfying. The quality of the extracted DNA is also very good”.
Paula Lado Henalse, Ph.D candidate at Ohio State University, USA
“We have tried various products. The QIAGEN PowerSoil Pro Kit is best at breaking really tough cells. We know if we are able to break those down, the softer cells will be broken. It's got the harder beads and the kit has an inhibitor removal tool which is quite useful.”
